The get interviewed page strikes again. It could have been weeks, months or even years before I came across Mario and his work. I was instantly attracted to his processing style. Not opting for the usual tones, or compositions his work stands out from the crowd. Have a look.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I am Mario Peña a photographer from El Salvador and spend my time between NYC and LA, now it has been around three years since the first time I took a camera and since August 2010 since I started to shoot seriously Fashion Photography.
What made you get into photography?
Things actually happened very natural, I had access to a camera and started to take photos, it felt very comfortable the whole medium and process, I tried before other techniques to self express, oil painting, pencil, ink, watercolor, sculptures, but for the way I work things are not really made to last, but photography aloud me to actually make them last forever.
How did you get started?
I started by curiosity, my brother got a camera who did not aloud me to use cause it was expensive equipment, with the time he let me use it, I started with self portraits and nature, then I move to objects to understand natural and artificial light, then I move to work with people when I already knew how to “draw” the photograph with light to focus more in the chemistry between model and photographer.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I am working mostly in Fashion photography, but I also take Music Portraits.
What gear are you using?
The list of my professional equipment is actually quiet short, I use a Canon 5D Mark II, the lenses are 50 mm f1.8, 100m f2.8 and a 17-40mm L , flashes 580 EXII and pocket wizard,
For the lighting I try to adjust to the situation, love natural light, but sometimes I mix flash with natural light to find the balance where still look comfortable to the eye
But I love to create and find curious pieces to play with the light, I make color filters for the flash and many more things, sometimes I even put the hand in front of the lens, even CD’s!
Whats your favourite lens and why?
I use a lot the 50mm f1.8, I like the distance between Subject and Photographers, the aperture and it doesn’t deform the image as a wider lens.
How are you marketing yourself?
I am basically just contacting directly potential clients, networking, events, and blogs, I am not really using social media that much.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Before even start taking photos think about what you want to express, once you know it, work hard and smart to create images that are better than the vision you had. Be true to yourself, don’t pay any regard, I think is really beautiful someone who is really authentic and who does not care if fits or not, if is good, it will be seen. In fewer words:
Find something to say, find how to say, and scream it, twice or three times if is necessary.
