Again I came Miguel’s work on flickr. It was actually his F1 shots that drew me in and from their I discovered his work in fashion, beauty and glamour. One of his favourite photos is a testament to the “it’s not the camera but the photographer” statement that so many believe (like my self) and so many disagree with. Enjoy.
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Miguel Martín and I was born in San Sebastian (Spain). Since I was a kid I was interested in photography and admired the work of fashion photographers (Avedon, Newton, Horst, Leibovitz and Testino). Unfortunately, I was not able to buy a DSLR until I finished my computer engineering studies, but I began to study the basics of photography when I was still at university.
What made you get into photography?
My PhD research project was about the “Inverse tone mapping” techniques and how they could be applied to incorrectly-exposed imagery.
This research allowed me to understand the basic concepts of photography. I had the chance to visit Max Plankt Institut fur Informatik in Germany and play with really expensive photographic gear (which, of course, I could not have bought by myself). This first serious approach to photography was way too technical for my personal taste. Soon I felt the need to develop my own creative style and began to make portraits of my friends, family and my (super-patient) girlfriend, who occasionally works as a model.
How did you get started?
As I said before, I started with a cheap DSLR and a kit lens (Nikon D80 + 18-135 f/3.5-5.6). Then I began to work (as a computer engineer in my university) and the first prime lens arrived (50mm f/1.8). I took thousands of pics with it and before I was able to realize it, i was working for a local model agency.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Fashion photography and portraits. Recently I’ve also jumped into the microstock market.
What gear are you using?
Body & lenses: Always nikon gear: D700, 70-200 f/2.8, 50 f/1.4, 35 f/2.0… Next lens will be a 85 f/1.4 or a 135 f/2 DC.
Also strobist gear and occasionally bowens lights in the studio.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
I love the 70-200 f/2.8 and the 85 f/1.4 because of the shallow DoF it produces and the superb image quality they give in FX bodies.
But… my secret love is the medium format gear!
How are you marketing yourself?
It began locally, thanks to Pasarella Image Agency (www.pasarella.es). They have helped me so much providing clients and models for test shootings.
Then I decided to apply my knowledge in online marketing and web technologies to make a website (http://www.miguelmartin.es), open a facebook account (www.facebook.com/miguel.martin.gonzalez) and began using twitter (@miguel__martin). These are the tools that have worked for me, specially twitter. Man, I love twitter.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
Hard question! I think is one of the very first photos I took with the D80.
But I also love this other I took to my girlfriend when we were getting up in the morning. No make up, no stylist. Just her. Ain’t she sexy?
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Enjoy what you do. Read lots of books. Take thousands of photos. Be critical with your own work. I mean, VERY critical. Talk to other photogs that you admire (twitter makes this easy!)
And, more importantly, develop your own style and don’t take it too seriously. Have fun!
