Jessica is one of these your photographers that has managed to go a long way in what seems to be a very short time. She has done some amazing work in the fashion industry and has had some great press.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a 20 year old photographer from Florida. I am a student from the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies. My interest in the arts started from a young age when I first started playing piano. I love cooking, traveling, music, art, architecture, my boyfriend, rainstorms, and meeting people.
What made you get into photography?
Like I previously mentioned my love for the arts started at a young age. Photography came to me in high school when I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life yet. I took a trip to Colombia with my parents and fell in love with the culture that was surrounding me. My parents have given me the camera throughout the trip to take photos and at that instant it clicked that photography was something I wanted to pursue.
How did you get started?
I got started by buying my first DSLR, the Canon Rebel xti. I would shoot mostly landscapes or buildings I found interesting. I was pretty shy at first, If I took photos of anyone it would be very discrete. Once I started studying in the university I got into fashion work. After narrowing it down to fashion I join model mayhem to find my models, which then provided an outlet for me to network more within my area specially after I have made a few good contacts.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Fashion is the most inspiring to me and is my main goal. Though every now and then I take on projects that for the most part involve the people who are most close to me, my family and friends, as well as some photos on travels I take.
What gear are you using?
My camera is the Canon EOS 5D. The Lens I use is the 50mm 1.4 lens and sometimes the 85mm 1.2. For lighting I only use natural light for location and for studio I use Alien Bees or Profoto. For film I am using my Bronica SQ-A that has a 80mm 2.8 lens on it.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
The 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.2 are both amazing the aperture it gives and the sharpness is just breathtaking.
How are you marketing yourself?
Usually it is by word of mouth but I do have a few sites that showcase my work. For example My website, facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, Twitter, and Behance.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
This is tough but I think it might be the photo I took of Hope Roberts. We had a fun afternoon of shooting at a ranch and then I made her jump in the water to take some photos at the end and the expression and the light just came out perfect in this one.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
I feel the most important thing is to stay true to yourself and to not be afraid as well as take chances.
