When I came across Tina’s work I didn’t know she was more of a wedding photographer, or that she was only 26. Anyway this is a great little interview which gives you an insight into how she managed to go pro in what seems to be a very short space of time.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I am a 26 yr old full time fashion/conceptual/commercial/wedding photographer and single mom, been shooting for 3 years total and professionally for 2.
What made you get into photography?
What first sparked my interest in photography was the initially accidental capturing of those intimate moments of my children with my little point & shoot camera… and of course the desire to make some sort of income on my own schedule.
How did you get started?
In late February of 2008, I used a tax return to purchase my first DSLR (a nikon d80).. the day after I took the camera home I all but forced my best friend out in the cold in my old wedding dress to model for me 🙂 The pictures were GOD-AWFUL but I fell obsessively in love with shooting immediately. My next set of models I found on craigslist HA! then turned to Model Mayhem… did a lot of free and low paying gigs until I booked my first wedding that fall which I shot for $500 bucks… Who knew only 2 short years later I would be shooting 15+ weddings per yr and growing 🙂
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Weddings bring home the bulk of the bacon, but I also shoot plenty of commercial, fashion, and music photography.
What gear are you using?
I NEED TO UPGRADE! but currently I’ve been shooting with a nikon d300 body and an alienbee lighting set up.
Whats your favourite lens?
I love primes. Favorite lenses that I own would be the 35mm 1.8 nikkor and the 50mm 1.4 nikkor. Favorite lens to rent is the 24mm tilt shift (PC) lens. These are just fabulous portrait lenses.
How are you marketing yourself?
It’s always been primarily word of mouth and of course social media. I do have some of my photos hanging in shops and such here and there with business cards nearby as well.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
OH wow that’s a tough one seriously…..
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Pay your do’s, but waste no time… What are you waiting for? It’s like Nike says….. 🙂
