Jordan’s a young photographer that does a lot of self portraits. He uses pretty basic gear to create some outstanding imagery.
Tell us a little about yourself?
We’ll, I’m originally from Botswana, a country right above Southern Africa and I moved to America about 4 years ago to start start college. I am currently a second semester junior and will hopefully be graduating in Graphic Design next fall!
What made you get into photography?
I first started off by fooling around with photoshop doing a bunch of cheesy affects and what not on random pictures I found on the web. During that time I stumbled upon Rosie Hardy’s work and it blew my mind! I was so amazed by the set ups in her pictures as well as the perfect photoshopping that she did. The moment I was done viewing every single picture in her stream I knew that was something I wanted to at least attempt. So almost exactly a year ago I decided to order myself a Pentax k-x with a crappy standard 18-55mm kit lens and it basically went on from their!
How did you get started?
I starting off by taking random pictures of trees, plants and what not, nothing special or interesting at all, but then I found out about the 365 project and even though I failed miserably at it, it definitely gave me push I needed to think out of the box as well as improve the quality of my pictures.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I do a lot of self-portraits, mostly because whenever I have free time or an idea there’s usually no one available. But also because it’s really just a great way to forget any problems that your having, it’s very therapeutic actually. Right now though Im trying to branch out and will be using more models for my work instead of me every time. As for style, I fell in love with “golden hour” shots and have taken many of them, but Im currently trying have some more complexity to my photos instead of just me in-front of a camera with a pretty sunset so Im trying for darker setting and getting a lot of inspiration from Brooke Shaden.
What gear are you using?
I use A Pentax k-x with a 50mm 1.4 lens. I also have 2 Vivitar H285 Strobes.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
Hands down the 50mm 1.4 lens! The quality is ridiculous! I haven’t used my 18-55 lens since I got it (over 10 months) I’ll probably end up upgrading to the 50mm 1.2 soon.
How are you marketing yourself?
At the moment I have a facebook fan page, a flickr and a carbonmade account. I do senior pictures, couple pictures, weddings and such.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
a good golden hour shot but my strobes kept on falling over from the wind. Then when I finally got the set-up I wanted my camera would not focus at all. I tried a few shots and still nothing would work properly so I admitted defeat and went home. When I finally looked through the pics I found this one. Even though it was out of focus I still loved it! I realized that not every shot will turn out perfect and sometimes our mistakes are what makes pictures unique and different from the millions of others out there.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Just try to market yourself and get your name out there. Do a few free photo-shoots to build up a portfolio (If they’ll pay you then sweet!) and then just start low and from their just price accordingly to the quality of your pictures.
