Tell Us About Yourself?
My name is Kristen Hook, I am 27 years old born in Kansas and raised in Kailua, Hawaii. As a little girl in Kansas I wouldn’t put my feet in the water, I was afraid of what lurked below. After moving to Hawaii my family and I lived near the ocean. After numerous trips to the beach and watching the family have so much fun in the waves, my dad finally convinced me to get on a boogie board. After catching my first wave, I fell in love with the ocean. Soon after my passion became surfing.
I thought it would be fun to move off the island for college, so I decided to head back to Kansas and study Film at The University of Kansas. After a year of being land-locked, my passion for surfing and the ocean was too strong to deny. I decided to continue my education in Ventura, California at Brooks Institute of Photography. I graduated with a BA in Film and emphasis in Commercial Advertising.
What Made you Get into Photography?
After college I moved to LA to start my career in the film industry. I worked as a Production Assistant on many projects and realized that I was not fullfiilled and I really enjoyed photography. I bought a water-housing and fisheye port for my Nikon D200 and started playing in the water shooting friends and having a blast!
How did you get started?
I started doing freelance photography for the clothing company Quiksilver and Roxy and eventually became an in-house photographer shooting PR, Marketing, and Online product photography. The experience I gained was invaluable but I was missing my home in Hawaii. I decided to take the leap and move back to Hawaii and start my own business.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I have really been getting into shooting weddings lately and incorporating water shots. I also shoot stock photography (Thought Equity). Specializing in Time-Lapse photography and still love doing Lifestyle.
