Todays interview is with Oklahoma Wedding & Portrait photographer Lenin. He has some amazing work and it was great to see what had to say in the RAW interview.
Tell us a little about yourself?
It’s hard to sum up my life story to something ‘little’. My name is Lenin Glass and I originated from the islands of the Philippines. I am the youngest of 6 boys and 2 girls. I was a farmer in the Philippines for the first 10 years of my life until my Aunt adopted some of my brothers and sister and took us to America – to Oklahoma (lol)… I am a graphic/web designer working from home on the weekdays and a photographer on the weekends. How I got the name is a whole other story but to keep it short, my father who I never met was a terrorist who named some of my brothers after a communist dictator; Vladimir and Castro. This is not even the half of the craziness!
What made you get into photography?
Photography was not a part of my life until recently, But I knew I was artistic at an early age. My uncle used to tell me that I would draw before doing any of my homework. When I was flying to the America, My Aunt(step mom) had a cheap film camera that I was curious about. We were at an airport in China and I loved the city view. I asked to borrow the camera to take a picture – and I broke it. I haven’t tried my hand on photography until 11 years after that. It was my brothers Canon 20D that fired up the flames once again. The rest was history.
How did you get started?
Girls… (JK, lol) Having played with Adobe since version 5.6 and coming to photography came hand in hand. I knew I could go further with it. Also, Photography ran in the family. You remember that crazy father I mentioned above? Well, I find out a year later after picking up the Canon 20D that he was a Professional Photographer in his sane years. A man I knew very little about left a very big mark.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I have great chemistry with strangers, so this pushed me towards Wedding Photography. Portraiture came naturally as I loved reminding people feel good about them selves.
What gear are you using?
Oh man… I am a collector, lol. I shoot Canon. I have 2 Canon 5D classics. My lenses are 14 2.8 mark II L, 50 1.2 L, 24-70 2.8 L, 70-200 2.8 IS mark I L. I light with the 580’s 1 and 2. For the big boys, I chose Alienbee 1600’s (2), Vegabond II, 47 Octo and the good ol’ sun. I protect my babies with the Pelican 1510 =]
Whats your favorite lens and why?
With all of these toys to pick from, I seem to go with the 50 1.2 L the most. I guess I own the rest for wedding purposes. It doesn’t hurt to have bragging rights of owning a good heavy chunk of ‘L’ Lenses ^_-
How are you marketing yourself?
Social Network and Aunties who love to brag about their talented Nephew. Published Print Advertisement is expensive but I will get to doing that for the coming years. For now, Facebook seems to get me a lot of attention. Open up the privacy settings and Photograph/Tag a friend with 1000’s of friends and you will double your views 10-fold. Now you know…
Whats your favorite photo you have taken?
I honestly can’t say I have a favorite photo. My style of photography varies and my look and feel of a photograph is never the same. BUT… If I had to pick, these are my top 3.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
I learned a lot the hard way. A lot of these new photographers are relying on Photoshop Actions and Presets. If this is you, take a step back and re-evaluate your self as a Photographer. A good professional photographer starts with a beautifully composed image. It comes with preparation and lots of it. Either this preparation comes from reading the manual of your camera on how to PROPERLY operate it or scouting an awesome location to shoot. It takes time and hard work to get to where you want to be. I am not even close to where I feel I can be. Respect other photographers and share knowledge with the eager.
