English not being Luca’s first language I want to thank him for doing the interview. Anyway Lucas shoots prime’s and swears by them, it’s something about prime lenses that just makes an image work. I think it has to do with making you think just a little more about composition.
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Lucas Cavalheiro, I’m 26 years old and I live in Porto Alegre, a one million habitants from south of Brazil city.
I’m graduated in computer engineer and I’m a master student in microelectronics now (I know, I know, no relation with photography 😛 ).
What made you get into photography?
The photography came to me as a hobby in 2006. A friend (classmate from computer engineer) showed me his Pentax *ist DS, that one year later would become my first DSLR. Love at first sight.
How did you get started?
I started to photograph with some landscapes and friend’s portraits. To get some money for new lenses, I began to work with some friends as a assistant and 2nd photographer in photoshoots of new faces and weddings.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Today, mainly portraits. New models, children, babies, pregnant. 90% of them are outside locations here in my city. Indeed, portraits with shallow DOF was always my favorite theme. And if you do this using strobist and post it on flickr, 100% of chances to have your picture favored by me.
What gear are you using?
Now I own a T2i Canon, lens kit, 50/1.8 and 85/1.8 and my old Pentax *ist DS with lens kit, 50/1.4 and 50-200/4-5.6 (I will convert the Pentax to infrared soon)
What’s your favourite lens and why?
EF 85mm f/1.8. The bokeh, the sharpness, the price, all this things makes this lens a must have. The 35/1.4 and 135/2 are in my wish list (after a 5D mkII)
How are you marketing yourself?
Google. Google. Google. I already mention Google? Ok. Most of the jobs I take came from my website, which is well ranked on Google. I always try to update my blog too. This is a good way to loyalty the clients and attract new ones and, at the same time, optimize my website on Google.
My flickr, twitter and facebook acts as a “not-so-professional view” of my work. I use these tools not only to promote my work, but also to interact and learn with other people.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
Well… it’s difficult to choose one, because every time we have a new favorite… I like pretty much these 4 photos:
One landscape from Porto Alegre
Another favorite theme: details
and two recent portraits
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Simple and straightforward:
– use prime lens
– shot in raw
– don’t spend too much time reading about equipment (reviews, comparisons, etc). Do you think that Da Vinci was a great artist because he knew all the brushes and paints?
– Learn about light and composition and how to promote your work.
– See lots of photos everyday
