Nigel breaks all the rules, auto playing music flash based website, he’s just lucky he can take a decent photo! 😉 Another 50mm shooter to add to the RAW ranks, it’s seems it’s the only lens he owns and he managed to get quite a bit out of it.
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Nigel Bland, and at the time of writing this, I’m currently 22 years old. I grew up in a small town called Albany, located in Georgia. Being an only child, I spent most of my time with a pencil in hand, drawing every little thing that came to mind. I guess you could say I was always the “artsy” kid in class. I’m a self-taught Graphic Designer/Photographer based out of Oklahoma City.
What made you get into photography?
My Aunt. She was the one in the family with the newest camera, taking pictures of everything. I bought a little point and shoot camera when I was in high school, and desired a DSLR shortly after. I was one of the few that were fortunate enough to take the newest photography class at my school, and my Aunt let me borrow her Canon AE-1 Program. It was all downhill from there. Most of all, recognition should go to my mom for always supporting everything I ever wanted to do, no matter how obscure. Thanks Mom.
How did you get started?
In high school I was in a band, and we needed art. The only local graphic designers wanted to charge way more than we could afford. I decided to take a try at Adobe’s Photoshop CS2, and it sucked me in. I was attempting every tutorial I could find. A few upgrades, and many years later, I bought myself a Nikon D70 kit on ebay for my birthday. I then realized that the digital SLR world was much more different than my little AE-1. I then spent all of my time researching. Reading and learning everything I could about my camera. Still learning to this day.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I’ve noticed that I really enjoy portraits. They say so much about a person. I also love candid shots. Nothing better than capturing genuine emotion.
What gear are you using?
I shoot everything with my Nikon D70 and 50mm 1.8
2 – White Lightning 10,000
2- White Lightning 5,000
A couple of stands, softboxes, reflectors, and umbrellas as well.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
The only lens I own! My 50mm 1.8 It’s been a great lens to learn on. Great detail and depth.
How are you marketing yourself?
Locally, business cards and word of mouth are my best friend. Taking advantage of facebook and I have a website up!
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
It was really difficult for me to pick just one. Everything is a learning experience, so of course, every photo I take, ends up being a new favorite. So here’s a few of my most recent!
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Learn your camera. Take your time, and if you have the opportunity, ask questions! There’s absolutely no reason to be intimidated by other photographers, but at the same time, you should respect them. There is always room for improvement!
