What the hell is a “film disc” up until this interview I had never even heard of it. Any Emiliano loves to shoot wide, just have a look at his favourite lenses and his favourite photo. Just out of curiosity is anyone else out their shooting with a “film disk”.
Tell us a little about yourself?
Hello everyone ! Hope you’re all having an awesome day. My name is Emiliano Márquez, I’m 21 and I live in Puebla, México. I have my own little studio in one of the best cities in México. I love to travel everywhere. I love food, specially mexican food (the true one, not that “porque no los dos?” brand. Sorry for the aussies reading this, you don’t have the real thing, haha). My life is photography, when I’m not taking pictures, I’m usually reviewing someone elses work, reading, thinking, or doing something related to it. For example, yesterday I bought a tiny little new camera, the Kodak Disc 4000, a film disc camera ! (¿film disc? yeah, there used to be film discs, and they were cool, Lo-Fi, and crappy)
What made you get into photography?
It was a natural evolution, I have always taken pictures, and my father gave me my first digital camera at 8. As far my friends remember, I was always the annoying brat with the camera, haha. I’m entirely self-taught.
How did you get started?
Professionally, when I won the constest of Myspace Mexico to be their official photographer (long before there was a Facebook in the scene), I had found what I really wanted to do, and from then I decided to drop Political Science and Public Administration in my fifth semester, to be a photographer full time.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I do portraiture, maily fashion, music and other crazy stuff. Art photography is one of my main goals. But it takes time to discover your own voice.
What gear are you using?
I use Canon bodies, Sigma lenses, Tronix Powerpacks, Studio One Strobes, Umbrellas, Softboxes, and that’s about it.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
Hmm, my Signma 30mm 1.4 is becoming my favorite for all ocations, but I also love my 10-20mm. I like to shoot wide and close.
How are you marketing yourself?
Word of mouth gets me most of my clients, Facebook, my website. And I’m currently launching a small add campaign in my city.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
Uhh, hard hard hard one. Ok, here it goes, it’s not my best picture, it’s not my most popular picture, It’s not even related to most of my work. But it’s mine, I took it just for me. It may be kind of twisted, but I love it. It’s called “In shadows we all fall”
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Photography is not about gear. Photography for me is about taking outside what you have on the inside. Read, study, like crazy, you don’t even need a book, you have two of the most powerfull things in the world : a brain and a computer. Couple those two, and you can learn anything you want. In the end, a camera, is just a tool.
