Heres one for all you film nuts out there. John and from what I can tell he doesn’t even own a digital camera. Anyway check out what he has to say then check out some of his film work.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m John Hill and I’m 19 years old from a suburb of Sacramento, CA. I give some of the most boring answers to interview questions, but really I swear I have a personality.
What made you get into photography?
My mom picked up a Canon AE-1 for me when I was 13 at a yard sale along with a college photography book. I read most of it and figured out how to work fully manual cameras and started taking pictures here and there. I developed a few rolls, left a few undeveloped. Occasionally I’ll find some rolls here and there from that time I didn’t develop. I sort of dread seeing the outcome, so I let it be.
How did you get started?
Well I took a photography class my freshman year of high school and I found it really enjoyable. I didn’t really keep up with it until my first year of college, which was when I started to get “serious”. I had a lot of support from my professor which was pretty important I think. Otherwise I might not have kept it up I don’t think.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I do a bunch of portraits regularly, but I get pretty excited about still life, live music photography and long exposure a whole lot. I try to touch on as many different styles as possible really. Anything to avoid becoming stagnant is good for anyone I think.
What gear are you using?
Dominantly I’m using a Canon A-1 for 35mm and a Minolta Autocord TLR for medium format. Every once in a while I’ll shoot a roll with a Holga 135 and Holga 135 TIM. Also along for the ride are a Ricoh XR-10, Fuji Instax 7, and a Petri 7s.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
I’m definitely a real big fan of the Canon FD mount 50mm f1.4. I try to shoot at 1.4 as often as possible, I love the shallow depth it can create. It’s also incredibly sharp even at 1.4. I don’t see very many that can compare in sharpness.
How are you marketing yourself?
Well, I made a facebook page recently. I think that counts. I’ve shown a few pieces at a gallery in downtown a couple times, but I probably dropped the ball on self-promoting those times. Every second saturday of the month Sacramento has an art gallery walk deal, and I’m hoping to start being a regular shower at that at some point soon. Otherwise it’s just flickr and a few other photography websites. With all of these portals though, it’s so hard to keep anything up besides Flickr. I’m pretty bad at it.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
I don’t really title anything so I have to vague, but I’m really excited on this shot forever. It was one of my first adventures in shooting long exposures, and it’s just a pretty dark image. Something like brooding. It’s in this really pretty, really dark place up in Auburn. The tonality in the night sky is so interesting to me, there’s zero post-processing done there.
