Joshua contacted me last month and from his email you could tell he just loves to shoot. He tells me he loves to shoot everything but his passion lies in portraits, lifestyle and candid shots. Interestingly enough he is waiting for his 5dmkII (by the time this is published he would have got it) after selling his 7d to go full frame. It’s going to be interesting to see what he come up with, when the full framed body arrives.
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Josh Tant. I am 23 years old. I attend California Baptist University in Riverside, CA for graphic design. I like designing, but photography is my passion. I used to draw a lot when I was young. I was always into art and all mediums. Now I found photography. I love it.
What made you get into photography?
My dad. When I was young, he would always have his camera with him. He had a Canon AE-1. He would always be taking photos of my brother and I. He would also have his old school video camera documenting all of our birthdays and Christmas’ He just loved capturing life. He is a huge inspiration to me.
How did you get started?
In 2008, my family and I went to Hawaii. I always loved taking pictures, but this trip sparked my love for photography. My dad let me borrow his Canon 40D and explore the island of Oahu. Oh man, did I explore. My brother and I went around the whole island. I was snapping the whole time. I loved it.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I really enjoy taking photos of people and lifestyle. Portraits and candid shots are my favorite.
What gear are you using?
I just sold my Canon 7D and bought a Canon 5D mark 2. Its still in the mail! Im excited to finally shoot full frame!
Canon 24-70L, Sigma 30mm 1.4, Canon 17-40L
Whats your favourite lens and why?
My favorite lens right now is my Sigma 30mm 1.4, but since I sold my 7D, I have been using it on my 40D. It is amazing. The DOF is outstanding. The bokeh is good and the images are very sharp. I’m saving up to get a 85L now. Maybe I’ll use my student loan money haha.
How are you marketing yourself?
I have the usual business cards. Facebook is a good network. Word of mouth always helps a lot. Forums are also helpful to get your name out there.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
I have a lot of photos that I would call my favorite haha. But If I had to choose, it would be one of the shots I took of my friend Darlene. We were out in the hills in north Moreno Valley just walking around looking for cool spots, and I took a headshot. It is just filled my such emotion and beauty. I think it is my favorite shot.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
My advice is to be open minded and creative. The photography business is growing and becoming more competitive. It is hard to stand out from everyone. I still have a lot to learn.
