So Derren caught up with the two trouble makers Noah Sahady and Jordan Voth while they were on their tour of destruction (wild adventure is what they call it). His blog is full of photos from their catchup, so I can only assume they all had great time. Oh and Derren takes an amazing photo aswell so make sure you check him out.
Tell us a little about yourself?
Oh hi there! My name is Derren Versoza, I am 22 years old and reside in Riverside, CA. I am currently a student pursuing an electronics and computer engineering degree with only one more year to go! I enjoy making music, hanging out with friends, camping, talking about the universe, and cooking!
What made you get into photography?
Simple. I wanted cool myspace default pictures. (and don’t act like you never had a myspace before)
How did you get started?
I developed an interest in photography when I was in 7th grade but never actually starting getting serious in photography until I was in college. I remember taking photos on my parents’ brand spankin’ new Nikon 5MP point-n-shoot. It wasn’t until about 8 years later when I first got to shoot my college roommate’s dSLR and at that point I knew I had to get one. I saved my pennies, sold a bunch of junk on craigslist, and used the money to buy a Nikon D40 🙂
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Mainly… probably portraits. But I’ve shot a wedding here and there, a couple of events, some landscape, and of course some pretty flowers. My style of photography is always changing though because I like to try different things and learn new techniques. My strobes are slowly collecting dust since I’ve been getting into a lot of this natural light portrait stuff.
What gear are you using?
Canon 5D Mark II
Canon 35mm f/1.4L
Canon 50mm f/1.4
Canon 135mm f/2.0L
Canon Canonet QL17 35mm Rangefinder
Alien Bees AB800
Whats your favourite lens and why?
My favorite lens would have to be my 50mm f/1.4. It’s the lens I always come back to even though I just got a 35L not too long ago. The 50mm focal length just has that variety of uses, right amount of depth of field, it’s not too wide and not too long, it’s just right! If Goldilocks were a photog, she would probably pick the 50mm too haha.
How are you marketing yourself?
I market myself mainly through Facebook and word of mouth. I’m blessed to have great friends who share my work and support me. My Flickr page is where all my recent work is uploaded, it’s a great place to share my work and network. I usually make photo blog posts every so often on my website which is actually connected to my Tumblr account.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
Narrowing down a favorite photo is too difficult… so how about Top 3 😀
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Some advice I have for new photographers is to first find your inspiration. With inspiration, you’ll be creative and motivated to shoot. I find my inspiration by browsing photography websites, magazines, catalogs, flickr, tumblr, and watching music videos. Also, before anything else… RTFM! Learn your camera!!
