It’s been awhile since we’ve had a fashion photographer on RAW, so let me introduce you to Beluah, an amazing young photographer from Brooklyn.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I am a 23 year old photographer. I was born & raised in a little place called Bensonhurst, Brooklyn
I lived there for 21 years & I now reside in central FL, traveling wherever work takes me.
What made you get into photography?
Growing up I never thought that the amount of time spent with my camera was anything abnormal.
It felt natural to me. My father carried around his Nikon F-2A. We had boxes of beautiful photos he had taken of my mother & family, to sift through. Photographs & cameras were just apart of life, nothing that I looked too deeply into. My first camera was a plastic toy camera my parents bought me for my 10th birthday, then onto to disposable cameras. My good friends worked at the corner drug store & developed my film for free. I had a healthy obsession with polaroids & then finally when I turned seventeen I could afford an SLR.
How did you get started?
I kept a part time job for years while I would shoot on the side.
Through word of mouth, my blog & the internet in general, my work expanded & finally I am now full time.
I’ve been published & featured on a few blogs, so people find me somehow!
I was really encouraged by my close friends & family really believing that I could make it happen.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Whether I’m shooting a model for an agency, a wedding, friends or my nieces & nephews playing together,
It is all Fine Art to me.
What gear are you using?
I use my Canon 5D Mark II (who doesn’t?) a 50mm 1.4 & 85mm 1.2
I only use prime lens’. I rather buy five cameras & run 2 miles back then forward before I purchase a zoom.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
50mm 1.4, hands down, everybody knows it. Perfect dimension, dreamy capture.
How are you marketing yourself?
I upkeep a blog & facebook in hopes that people will find it interesting enough to follow.
I’ve also said many many prayers.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
This photo deviates from every photo you will see on my website, but if every image were to get erased and I had to choose just one, this would be it.
It’s a picture of my father on his birthday (lacking his epic beard) with all of his grandchildren. I prefer someone else to pick a favorite rather than myself, not sure it’s possible! They all mean something different to me.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
If you love it & cannot imagine your life without it…just do it! but at the same time don’t force it.
