Here you go aspiring wedding photographers. It’s been awhile since we’ve posted up someone in your field. Dawn has some great work and is a perfect example of using what you have and saving up for better gear. She recently purchased a 70-200 2.8! Enjoy and make sure you check out her work.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I am happily married (just celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary) to a man who makes me laugh every day and I am also the mother of two beautiful children, a daughter and son who are twenty two months apart. I firmly believe that “Life is like posing for pictures. We pose the way we want to be seen by others. But stolen shots are better. They capture who we really are!”
What made you get into photography?
Ever since I can remember I have always had a camera in my hand. It was my way of documenting everything so I wouldn’t forget a single moment.
How did you get started?
4 years ago, a friend of mine who is a professional photographer told me about “Flickr”. He convinced me to do a 365 with him. After about a month of entries, he sat me down & told me that I needed to stop doing photography for free for my friends & family and to start my business. I was very unsure about it; but after some soul searching I realized it was what I wanted to do for a living.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I LOVE shooting Wedding & Boudoir Photography. Those are my primary area of focus. I also shoot portraits for those clients who request.
What gear are you using?
I am a CANON JUNKIE! LOL – I currently shoot with a 50D (saving to get the 5D Mark II). I have 50mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200 IS II f/2.8
Whats your favourite lens and why? My favorite lens used to be my 85mm f/1.8 (which I still adore & use quite often); but recently I started really using my 70-200 IS II f/2.8 a lot because I love the bokeh I get when I rack it out (it’s a TOTAL BEAST to carry around because it is so heavy; but the product is WORTH IT)
How are you marketing yourself?
Primarily my marketing is via my facebook business page (which has over 2300 fans) and word of mouth from my clients as well as many other wedding vendors in the industry.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
OMG, this is such a tough one because of two reasons, 1- I am my own worst critic and 2-typically my favorite is not necessarily the client’s favorite too (since I am critiquing from a technical photography aspect & they are viewing from an emotional one…lol)! My favorite from my most recent wedding is attached. It got lots of love on FB – so maybe the consensus agrees…lol
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Find an established & seasoned photographer who would be willing to mentor you. Also, be very sure that once you go pro that you are not undercutting the existing professionals by giving your services away for too low a price. Be licensed & insured!
