Interview with Flora Deborah

Flora is a very talented fashion photographer based in London. It’s been awhile since I’ve had someone say that their favourite lens is a zoom, but her choice of zoom is quite nice. Enjoy.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m Flora Deborah, art oriented fashion photographer based in London. I was born in Evian (France), grew up in Milan and moved to the UK in 2008.

What made you get into photography?

From an early age I’ve always been deeply passionate about art. I loved drawing, painting, making knick-knacks, small jewelry and sewing. After achieving a BA in PR I finally decided to take an art foundation course and discovered photography. At that point something just clicked, I loved the fact that I could recreate images that I had in my mind and I felt in love with the medium.

How did you get started?

I moved to London in 2008 and studied photography at the University of the Arts. I tried things, made mistakes, learnt from those and kept going. I’m still learning and doing my best to reach my goals. There is always something new to learn in photography and this make me love it even more.

What sort of photography do you mainly do?

I manly do fashion photography and work on art based personal projects.

What gear are you using?

I always use a Nikon when shooting digital, and mostly a Hasselblad, a Pentax k1000 and a Polaroid SX70 when shooting film. I also have a Bowens lighting kit and other old cameras that I love to shoot with once in a while.

Whats your favourite lens and why?

The 24-70mm, it’s my all time favourite. It lets me zoom in and out and is really sharp.

How are you marketing yourself?

I mostly use online social networks to market myself: twitter, facebook, flickr. It’s amazing how many people you can make contact with while still in your favourite pyjamas! (..ps I swear that I do shower and wear normal clothes when I get up in the morning!)

Whats your favourite photo you have taken?

My favourite photo would be this self-portrait I took during the sunrise by the sea in south of France. I have some good memories of those days and it’s part of a project that I care a lot about.

Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?

If you love it, fight for it! Take pictures every day. Learn the basics and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Make a business plan and always remember to have fun!
