Vik emailed me and I went through the usually research phase of checking his online profiles to see if I thought he had something to add. Obviously because you are reading this he did 🙂 He has some really strong portrait work in his portfolio that I think will offer up some inspiration for you al..
Tell us a little about yourself?
Well, I’m just a regular 22 year old, except that photography is a big part of my life. I’m actually born and raised in Surrey, BC, Canada, but somehow ended up living in Roseville, California now and I’m lovin it! There are actually a few things I love that would describe me very well. Wife, Family, Milo (my Dachshund), photography, and my car.
What made you get into photography?
My dog. It was the end of summer 2009, my wife wanted a little dog and we ended up getting a Mini Dachshund. I had found a photographer on flickr who was taking amazing photos of his dachshund, and immediately thought, I want to capture these moments with my dog as he grows. Long story short, I ended up with a Nikon D80 and quickly switched to a Canon 5D. I never looked back from that point, slowly progressing, trying to better my skill set everyday.
How did you get started?
Using the internet was how I got started. Whether it was spending countless hours day and night on potn having fellow photographers critique my shots or asking them about different techniques, it was always the internet where I looked. Flickr was also a big part of me growing as a photographer, going through different photographers work to find inspiration to be creative and come up with new ideas. I found that it took me a little while to find myself as a photographer, to realize what my style was, and once I did, I fell in love with it.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Portraiture. I’ll occasionally do some automotive work, but it would have to be personal, more for myself. People are the most interesting subject to me, so I gravitate straight to working direct with new people. Using strobes is something I find interesting, but natural light portraits is where it’s at!
What gear are you using?
Somethings are always changing, but my core equipment will always be the same. Right now, I’m using a Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 50mm 1.2L, and a AB800.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
I’d have to say of course, my only lens right now, Canon 50mm 1.2L. I’ve owned quite a few L lenses, but the 50L, to me was just perfect. It fit my style, and I don’t think I’ll every get rid of it. I love really square portraits, and sun flare, as you can probably tell from a lot of my photos. I’ll always have the 50L on my camera.
How are you marketing yourself?
Social networking is where it’s at! Facebook, flickr, and also my website. Of course, word of mouth is always a big way to get business, especially in a lot of the small towns here in California, but most people find me on the internet. My website is sort the universal place to see my work, but I find more people interested in looking on facebook or flickr as it’s updated more often.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
That’s really hard to narrow down, I think most photographers would agree, but I’ll say this one here would be it, if i did have to choose. It’s actually pretty recent, I feel like my work grows shoot to shoot.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Don’ settle for where your at. Always keep growing as a photographer, find new ways to create something amazing. Find inspiration, whether it be from family, friends, or fellow photographers online. There are great photographers out there that are always willing to help and give awesome tips on how to improve. I still always ask for help when needed. I never think I hit a plateau.
