I came across Daniels work on 500px when I was doing a bit of surfing. A few things you should know English is not Daniels first language so keep that mind when reading the interview. However his interview actually provides some helpful information for those of you who are open to this sort of thing.
Anyway his work is amazing so I recommend you check out his website for more of his work.
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Daniel Otto, I’m a 29 years old freelance web-devoloper from St. Ingbert, Germany.
I like to go snowboarding and mountainbiking, and i love photography.
What made you get into photography?
As I get my first camera, I was 9 years old. My education in a postproduction agency was the begin to a more seriously photography.
I was excited by this great pictures i worked with and wanted to create my owns.
How did you get started?
About 8 years ago, I started was a canon 300d and a book about the basics in photography. Further i bought many newspapers and books and applied for an account in a german online platform with over 1000 movies about photography and finally, at some days i guess i looked at about 1000 images on flickr to inspire me.
3 weeks ago, i startet with an 30 years old Canon ae1 SLR into analog photography, I’m looking forward to 5pm today, than I’ll see my first results 🙂 I’m quite excited!
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Sure, I’m still interested in complex composings (it was my job), but the main interessting kind of photography is people, especially portrait! I like simple, casual pictures in available light situations as much as fashion and beauty pictures with complex lightsettings!
What gear are you using?
My camera is a canon 5d mark 2, I use a canon 24-105 f4 IS lens and a canon 50mm f1.4.
… and some studio stuff!
What’s your favourite lens and why?
My favorite lens is the 50mm 1.4. It has a great detail drawing and the drawing of the unsharpness in the background looks great (omg, this sounds terrible, is this correct ? :)) It’s a perfect lens for all situations and a good price!
How are you marketing yourself?
I load my pictures in a few communities like flickr and 500px. Further I use my own website to link pictures on facebook! But most of my shootings happen because someone recommends me.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
This is very hard, but these photos are surely many of my favourites:
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
I actually don’t know what a pro photographer is. If it means to earn money, there’s much more than only take pictures!
My advice is to do what you like to do. Don’t do many jobs you’re not interested in. Find out your favorite kind of photography, be a specialist in it and create your own style!
If everything you do, you do with a passion, I think you’ll get to turn pro.
