I’ve found the more that I play around with landscapes I have a greater respect for photographers Davide who have some amazing wildlife and landscape work. As always Davide has done a great RAW interview providing some good insight into his work and how he does things.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I was born in 1983 in Rome (Italy), not as a photographer but as a professional artistic roller skater.
I travelled around Italy and Europe for 17 years of my carrier where I gained international achievements. At 18 years I won my first world championship…but this is an old story!
I’ve always wanted to represents my emotions, my memories and my personal point of view with art, so I decided to follow my passion at Academy of Fine Arts of Urbino.
I improved my skills using darkroom and all theory and photographic practice during my studies at Academy where I got a degree in Multimedia & Visual Design, then I converted to the digital system.
For 4 years I was in the official photographic team of “Millemiglia” following historical cars in this exclusive competition; during those years I was aware that photography of vintage cars would never have led nowhere so over the frequent and long trips I made following epoque car’s competitions, I shot thousands of pictures of landscapes and cities I visited, It was an excuse to improve my technique and buying a new camera. Now I have two jobs, the first one as a freelance photographer and the other as a part-time seller in a big electronic shop in Rome. I think that it’s hard to live as a photographer, but I hope to leave the part-time job and turn my passion into a main occupation.
What made you get into photography?
My passion for photography started when I left my home in Rome to study at Academy of Fine Arts many years ago; I had brought with me the analog camera of my mom , it was a Minolta x-300 with a 50mm 1,7 lens.since then I have never left home without a camera. I always had the common dream of many others: working for National Geographic Magazine.
How did you get started?
After selling lot of picture on main Microstock’s sites without having a good earning success, I met a professional photographer from Florida that gave me some suggestion to start a business in the photographic field. He convinced me to start selling my pictures for magazines and so I opened my first photographic website.
In this year I made many photographic trips, visiting :Scotland, Greece, Egypt and Finland. My main aim is to travel and pay me travel through my passion.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
Mainly I love landscapes, nature and macro pictures, I like getting lost in the light of a pink sunrise or waiting hours to take some wildlife image. I usually try to capture the atmosphere of a place and enclose it in a shot.
What gear are you using?
I own a Canon 5d Mark II, Canon 24-70L f2,8, Canon 70-200L f2,8 IS II, Tamron 17-35 f2,8-4, Tamron 180 f3,5 Macro and lot of accessories like ND and graduated filters and the new Canon EF TC2x III extender.
Whats your favourite lens and why?
I love the 70-200 for its sharpness and for the capability to separate the subject from the background, but I don’t have a favourite lens, I love all my lenses and I normally use what I need depending on the situations.
How are you marketing yourself?
I have a website where customers could directly buy a print or download my pictures; a blog that usually I update with all news about my photographic activity such: travel, image’s updates in the website gallery and some tip about using camera settings; a linkedin account where I can expand my professional and business connections for future collaborations; a facebook account where I share all my work updates.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
I am very critical with myself, but I have some pictures that I like for the moment I lived.
I was in Scotland, making an alone self drive tour and this image appeared in front of me like a light in a dark cave. I was driving in the Isle of Skye, I immediately stopped the car and I walked on the roadside to find the best composition to include the fishermen and communicate the special sense of peace and greatness of this wonderful place.
The last travel I did in Greece was awesome, this image was taken during a boat tour in the lake and light was perfect for me, raylights and clouds were in a balanced armony with mountains.
My first adventure in Finland hides. The first day I waited about 3 hours before seeing something. After that a big brown bear appeared.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
The main advice I give is to never think we’ve learned all, always keep in mind there’s something to try and to discover about photography. Open a website, promote your self with internet social platforms and forums.
Find your preferred sort of photography (wildlife, landscapes, portrait, still life, architecture…) and specialize your self in it.
Never give pictures for free at magazines with the promise of “we’ll put your name and you’ll become famous” : you will lose your business, your time and you’ll eat your hands after that!
