Correct me if I’m wrong but I think Dennis is the first full frame Sony photographer on RAW. I think he’s the first Sony DSLR users as well. I’ve heard some really good things about the Sony full frame bodies but I guess I should just let Dennis’s work do the advertising.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a 27 year old hobby photographer located in southern Germany. I love to travel and get to know new countries and regions.
What made you get into photography?
I never had to do anything with photography since I was at a New Year’s Eve party in 2008. I was a little tipsy and asked a friend of mine, who brought his DSLR, if I could take his cam and make some party shots. He accepted and gave me a quick briefing on the controls and I started to make photos. This was quite funny and interesting for me and I decided to have a closer look into photography. Did I hear someone say that alcohol is bad?
How did you get started?
In early 2009 I bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ28 to practice some photography at beginners level. I didn’t want to buy a DSLR straight from the start as I was not sure about this hobby being a long time fun factor. The camera sure had its limitations but I really was happy with my first pictures. Also I bought Adobe Lightroom to process my Images.
In mid 2009 I bought my first DSLR which was a Sony Alpha DSLR-A700. The main reason why I chose this system was the handling. With my big hands the Canon and Nikon Cameras didn’t feel as good as with the Sony.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I mainly do landscapes. Our world is so beautiful and I was too blind to see that kind of beauty until I started with photography. My main goal is to capture moments that only last for a few seconds (mostly during sunrise or sunset). Even common landscapes look very beautiful if you capture them during the best possible light. But it’s a challenge to take a photo at the right place to the right time. I failed quite often but if everything works out and you get a perfect photo you forget about the failures.
What gear are you using?
I use a Sony Alpha DSLR-A850 full frame camera with following lenses:
Sigma 50/1.4 Zeiss 16-35/2.8 Zeiss 135/1.8
Whats your favourite lens and why?
At the moment it’s the Zeiss 135/1.8. If used for portraits it creates an incredible dof with a very smooth bokeh. It’s very capable for distant landscapes as well.
How are you marketing yourself?
My pictures can be seen at my personal website, flickr, 500px (which I recently started) and some few on 1x.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
Here’s a collection of some of my photos that I like most. Captured in Italy, UK and Germany.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Advice to go pro? Someone please tell me first 😀
So far I can advice following
– Learn from others. If you see a photo which you like you should try to make a similar one
– Don’t be afraid of “stealing” compositions. That’s a very effective way to train your “photographic eye”
– Accept that some people won’t like your photos
– Go out and take photos
