I’ve always been interested in giving a little exposure to new and upcoming photographers. Today’s interview falls into that category with a 17 year old photographer out of Atlanta. Do you have any advice for Ben, leave it in the comments below.
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Benjamin Barnes and I am 17 years old (turning 18 the 25th of this month) . I have spent my whole life in Atlanta, hopefully not much longer. I am currently a senior in high school and have applied to colleges (UNM, GSU, PSU, UO, UW). As of now, my top choice is University of Washington, but that all depends on if I am accepted. I have no idea as to what I am going to major in but I have a while to think about that before I set my sights on anything.
What made you get into photography?
As stupid as it is, I was one of those kids that just picked up a camera and started taking pictures. For the most part, I just did it because I was bored and it was the only think I thought of doing at the time. It was when I was making the transition from middle school to high school back in 2009. My dad had a Rebel XT (I still have it to this day) and I thought it was the coolest looking thing ever. I took it outside and started to take pictures of random things around my house and down my street. Since I picked up that camera, my passion for photography only grew.
What sort of photography do you mainly do?
I like to focus on portraits mainly but I do just about anything. When I can find friends that want pictures I will set something up, but this is rare with the people around my age. I have yet to be exposed to weddings and events of that sort, so I am still open to most branches of photography.
What gear are you using?
I am currently using the original Canon 5D, a Canon 35mm f1.4 L, and a Canon 50mm f1.4. I have a Canon Rebel XT for whenever I need it (which is almost never) and I also have a Canon Elan 7e for whenever I want to shoot film. The Rebel XT and Elan 7e are my dad’s but he hasn’t used them in 6+ years, so I consider them mine 😉
Whats your favourite lens and why?
My favorite lens is the 35L currently. I have tried all focal lengths before and I really dislike going above 50mm; I find it restricting.
How are you marketing yourself?
I do most of my marketing online. I always feel that my friends on Facebook get annoyed with me constantly uploading pictures, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Whats your favourite photo you have taken?
What post processing tools do you use?
I use Photoshop CS5 as well as Lightroom 2.7. I usually use Lightroom if I have a batch of photos but if I really want to put time into editing then I will do them one by one in Photoshop.
How did you shoot and edit this photo?
For this picture, I mounted my Rebel XT on tripod and used the remote (you can see it in my hand) to trigger the camera. For these pictures, I have the 35L on my camera. I would have used my 5D but at the time I did not have a wireless remote for it. I got flour and threw it all over my self while taking pictures constantly. When I was done shooting, I had roughly 40 pictures to go through. I picked one that was towards the end of the shoot and used it as a base image. I dropped the others on top of it and masked in some of the flour from other images just to get more flour.
Advice for new photographers looking to go pro?
Take as many pictures as you can and don’t be concerned about how good your gear is.
