Child photography presents it’s own set of challenges, for instance the optimal times for shooting (the golden hours) are not the best times for families/children. Anyway I think this might be the first child photographer we’ve had on RAW so here goes 🙂
Tell us a little about yourself?
I am a wife of almost 6 years to my best friend and we have 2 precious children, Ella and Miles, who we love to pieces. I work as a registered nurse full time and run a photography business also. I love my crazy, hectic, sometimes overwhelming life and would not have it any other way!
What inspired you to get started in photography?
My mom gave me a Canon SLR one Christmas and I took a basic photography class at our local Technical college to learn the functions of it but just played around for a couple of years until I had my first child, Ella, then she inspired me to capture life as it happens because it goes by so fast. Since then I have been living and breathing photography and wanting to learn everything I possibly can about photography.
What gear do you take to each shoot and what lens can you not live without?
Canon 7D:) My 3rd child! 50mm 1.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 My next purchase will be the 85mm lens!
How do you market yourself and has social media been an important part?
Facebook and word of mouth
What’s your favourite photo that you’ve taken and does it have any significance?
My all time favorite photo is probably one of my sister, her husband, and her little girl. I converted it to black and white so that you can view all the emotion in it. I love the feel of togetherness that it shows between a little girl with her mom and dad!
Select a photo you have taken, explain how it was taken and how did you edit it?
This photo of a little boy is one of my new favorites, it was taken this past week. This little man is a bacterial meningitis surviver. Although it did leave him with some special needs. This photo just captures such joy and is the definition of childhood! I did a clean edit and popped the color and also warmed up the background.
What processing tool do you use and do you believe in the camera doing all the work or in post ?
I use Photoshop CS5. I try my best to get the exposure and focus right in camera to limit work afterward in photoshop.
Whats your favourite photography accessory other than your camera? My fairly new iMac;) They say once you go Mac you don’t go back and I am now a firm believer.
Where do you prefer to post your photos online and why there?
I post sneak peeks on Facebook and/or my blog and then use Zenfolio for my proofing galleries. I use Facebook so that friends and family can view the photos and they can be tagged which also spreads the word about my photography.
Do you ever get photographers block and if so what do you do to get inspired again?
Definitely, I try to block time in my schedule for me time and family time so that my photography does not consume my life.
Is there anything you wish you had done when you first started in photography that would of made a difference?
I wish that I would have and still wish I knew more about the business/accounting end of running a business, I am still learning but definitely know more than I did when I started. I thank the Lord for my accountant.
Any advice for new photographers wanting to go pro?
Learn your camera and it’s functions first and foremost. Keep your head up and continue to learn and educate yourself.
