Frank is a good friend of RAW’s so as this is the first of many tutorial video reviews I have, I thought I would start with his. Plus I’ve come across an awesome deal for the set of 3 videos that will give you an instant jump start into lighting your portrait of glamour photos.
Awesome instruction! Frank is a KelbyTraining instructor, but this is a little more raw in it’s delivery. There is about 3 hours of footage where Frank takes you on some of his shoots and workshop classes. I think the best part about it is he hasn’t tried to use the audio from the workshops. He has recorded additional narration over the top so you get a clear understanding of what he is doing along with the results.
As far as the lighting techniques used, there is everything from natural light, natural light with reflectors, balancing ambient and strobes along with overpowering the sun. He even shows how to fake a studio look on location. along with using some lighting equipment as props.
I didn’t expect it but there is some photoshop lessons in there as well, but those of you who know Frank, know that he is more of a “get it right in camera” kind of guy and uses photoshop to just finish of the image with certain effects that weren’t possible during the shoot. The one that springs to mind is the day to night effect, shot in a old church cemetery. It’s a really cool effect for those wanting something a little different and perhaps don’t really find the need nor desire to head into a cemetery at night.
I was surprised and excited to see that most of the footage was based on shooting on location. This is more then just a set of lighting tutorials, there is some great advice on finding locations, travelling to shoots in different countries and general shoot knowledge about permission, rules and everything else you can think of.
Well there is this site called PhotoWhoa that does deals on photography products. Anyway they have the 3 lighting videos for $59.00 which is a saving of 41%. Personally I believe the full price of $100 is pretty cheap but this is just a bonus. Anyway this is definitely worth checking out for anyone who is getting into off camera flash, or if you feel your lighting techniques are a little flat and boring. The only catch is that this deal runs out in about 4 days, so you’ll need to act fast. Buy it now, and watch it on the weekend.
[...] get into off camera flash then this is the perfect opportunity. Many of you have already purchased Franks 3 lighting videos after I posted about them late last week. They are a great buy at $100 but they are even better at [...]
