Well we all know it’s going to happen. Nikon have the “1″ Olympus, Sony and FujiFilm seem to be killing it (Australian slang for: Doing really well) at the moment with their offerings. So it’s inevitable that Canon has to join that market. One can only imagine that the point and shoot sales would be slowly dropping as mobile phone cameras are getting better. Those that are wanting a little more creative control would be looking at these compact system cameras.
The rumors flying around and there are even invites making their way around at the moment for a new product announcement event on July 23rd. I’ve had the the 23rd marked down for awhile now but with the invites starting to show up it looks like something will be released on the 23rd from Canon.
As far as specs for this Compact System Camera from Canon, there really isn’t anything concrete. It looks like it will launch with 2 lenses and an EF adaptor. There is no word yet if the EF adaptor would work with EF-S lenses but I would guess that this would be a smart move by Canon.
Canon recently released some new primes (24, 28 & 40mm) and are suggested that these small primes are meant to work with this new mirrorless camera.
It is a safe guess that Canon will put the 14mp CMOS G1 X sensor in it. I would love to see Canon look back at their film camera range and create a body from something like their rangefinders.
Unfortunately there really haven’t been too many leaks about this camera, so only time will tell.
