The long awaited interview with my friend Ze Weng Wong. As with most photographers we interview, Ze had the interview finished weeks ago but we were just waiting on the profile pic. Enlisting the help of his 8 year old son who is obviously managed to pick up some of his dads camera skill. I give you Perth based photographer Ze Weng Wong, talking about photography, business and starting a company called Ze Albums.
Tell us a little about yourself?
Everybody calls me Ze short from Ze Weng Wong. I’m Malaysian born Chinese. I’m from a town called Batu Pahat in the state of Johore, Malaysia. I migrated to Perth in 1993 and have been here ever since. I’m married to Urika Jones Wong with one 8yr old boy and a 1.5yr old girl. I’m Capricorn.
What inspired you to get started in photography?
My interest in photography started when I was back in malaysia watching my dad shoot landscapes for his geography book. It was fun going to different places taking photos to go with his topics in the books.
What is Zen Albums?
Zen Album is a company I started in 2008. It was to fill in the market for professional photographers in Perth was missing. Zen Albums provide affordable good quality albums which is also very customisable in size and presentation. Its more a boutique album company which work along side photographers to create albums that are unique.
What gear do you take to each shoot and what lens can you not live without?
I use two Canon 5D Mark 2 and can’t do without the 16-35 f2.8L lens.
What’s your favourite bag and why?
135 F2 is my favourite lens. Its fantastic for portraits and for low light events.
I asked what’s your favourite bag but it doesn’t matter that’s a very nice lens
How do you market yourself and has social media been an important part?
Majority of my business are Word of Mouth basis. Social media has played a big part in helping expand the exposure reach of my images and getting more people to know about my work.
What’s your favourite photo that you’ve taken and does it have any significance?
Select a photo you have taken, explain how it was taken and how did you edit it?
Photo was taken in daylight. I under exposed the shot and placed a remote flash on the groom’s lap to expose their faces. Editing in Lightroom to desaturate and darken around the main subject. Most of my post processing is done in Lightroom and very seldom require Photoshop unless its for airbrushing, intensive editing of image.
What processing tool do you use and do you believe in the camera doing all the work or in post ?
I use Lightroom about 90% of the time. For the work that I produce I believe in camera doing all the work and post editing is to enhance it further but not essential if everything is done on camera.
What’s your favourite photography accessory other than your camera?
LED light panels is my favourite accessory that I use for my shoots.
Where do you prefer to post your photos online and why there?
On my website and Facebook majority of the time as they are for my audience to see my work and keep them updated.
Do you ever get photographers block and if so what do you do to get inspired again?
Yes I do get photographers block occasionally and sometimes will refer back to videos and also attend workshops to get inspirations.
Any advice for new photographers wanting to go pro?
I would have prefer to have the opportunity to second shoot for master photographers at the time before venturing on my full time photography business. It would have taken me less time to learn all the photography, business and running of business myself.
